Legally approved surveillance of telecom services
Lawful Interception (LI) is the legally approved surveillance of telecommunication services, and it has become an important tool for law enforcement agencies (LEAs) for investigating and prosecuting criminal activities and terrorism.
Most countries have passed laws that require telecommunication service providers to support LEAs with duly authorised requests to identify, monitor, and deliver all of the electronic communication of specified individuals and groups. In addition there are national regulatory authorities and international standardisation bodies that together define the technical framework for lawful interception.
